Most water leaks in your basement or crawl space occur along the bottom seams of you homes foundation, but the also may enter through the seams in your block or stone walls, cracks in your walls and around your basement windows. All of which should be corrected as soon as possible.
Basements are built in the ground and are made out of pourous masonry materials such as block, stone or concrete. As a result your basement is constantly being subjected to moisture from all sides in which the upper levels of your home are not subjected too. Think of it this way, you dig your basement in clay which creates a clay bowl around your home, when it rains this bowl fills up because of the loose backfill around your home. All this water needs to go somewhere and if you do not have a proper drainage system the water will penetrate your walls and floor and will enter your home causing you seriuos problems over time.
